New York Off Broadway Shows

The Real “Must See” Shows

Don’t let the name New York Off Broadway Shows fool you! I’m going to let you in on a New York Insider Broadway Tip… a real New Yorker knows never to underestimate the entertainment value of an Off Broadway Show!

Famous Broadway Shows that got their start Off Broadway include Hamilton, RENT, A Chorus Line, HAIR, Avenue Q, In the Heights and Little Shop of Horrors. Which would you rather do? Pay $200 per ticket to see it on Broadway after the rave reviews or pay $20 to see the show on it’s true opening night…

Another trick to Off Broadway shows is catching some great shows after they’ve come off Broadway – and they only bring the best ones back. Right now, you can check out Jersey Boys and Rock of Ages, both of which were huge Broadway hits!

My Off Broadway Show Story

One of the very first Off Broadway Shows I attended was to support two high school friends of mine, Adam Pascal and Idina Menzel, both of whom I’d heard sing all through our school years. The musical, a rock opera, got rave reviews and went on to become the famous New York Broadway Show, RENT.

Idina then went on to star in Aida, won a Tony Award for Elphaba in the Broadway musical Wicked, starred in the If/Then Broadway Musical, and of course, played Elsa in Frozen. Adam has since performed in Aida, Cabaret, Memphis, Chicago, Something Rotten and Pretty Woman in 2019.

Avenue Q Off Broadway Musical

Closed May 2019. Definitely not for kids (maybe teenagers), Avenue Q has puppets singing songs such as, "I’m Not Wearing Underwear Today," "The Money Song," "Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist," and "It Sucks To Be Me."

Synopsis: AVENUE Q is the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who comes to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. He soon discovers that the only neighborhood in his price range is Avenue Q; still, the neighbors seem nice. Avenue Q offers a fresh take on a story we’ve all lived, as we look for a new beginning in an unknown city. Written by Robert Lopez, Jeff Marx and Jeff Whitty, the show features such inspired songs as "It Sucks to be Me," "Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist," "The Internet is for Porn" and "I Wish I Could Go Back to College."

RENT Off Broadway Musical Rock Opera

RENT | New York Off Broadway Shows

Closed. Loosely based on Puccini’s opera La Boheme, Rent tells the story of a group of impoverished friends struggling to survive and create in New York’s gritty Alphabet City in 1991. Over the course of one year, Rent follows these starving artists as they strive for success and acceptance while enduring the obstacles of poverty, illness, impending gentrification and the AIDS epidemic.

Synopsis: With its single industrial set and a score that shifts easily between pounding rock numbers and pop-style ballads, Rent remains the quintessential rock musical. The show’s narrator (filmmaker Mark) leads the audience through the emotional rollercoaster of its plot. While the day-to-day struggles of scraping by make up the show’s narrative, the heart of Rent remains the multiple love stories that run throughout.
