Best NYC Locations, Cheap, Budget, Closest

The Best US Tennis Open hotels include our cheap, budget and lesser known discount hotels along with Hotels near Grand Central, Penn Station and the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center (NTC) in Queens.

US Tennis Open Hotels

Part of the fun of traveling to the US Open is to see NYC, right? In that case, you’ll want to stay in hotels closest to the NYC public transportation that takes you there quickly. There are two main ways to get to the NTC: 7 subway and LIRR (Long Island Railroad). If you have a car to park, then a Queens hotel with a shuttle to the NTC might be best for you.

If you prefer to stay in Manhattan, ideally, you’ll want to be near Penn Station or Grand Central for the quickest access to the NTC. The 7 subway train has two stops in NYC, Times Square and Grand Central Station and the LIRR leaves from Penn Station. During the US Open, both the subway and LIRR send extra trains to and from the Mets-Willets Point Station at the busiest times. If I had to choose, my recommendation on the better area of NYC in which to stay (nicer, more shops, restaurants, attractions) is near Grand Central.

If you need to park your car, or want to avoid Manhattan prices and stay near the NTC, see Queens Hotels Near the US Open.

Discount NYC Hotels

Discount NYC Hotels – These are my hand picked hotels that start at $25 per night. They are not always listed on generic hotel travel websites or they may be listed as ‘specialty lodging,’ and therefore hard to find.

Discount NYC Hotels

While you may have to compromise to stay in one these hotels, like a shared bathroom, or no television, you cannot beat the prices for these locations.

  • Seton Hotel – two blocks from Grand Central, check out their Seton Economy Option, offering a price point significantly lower than traditional midtown Manhattan hotel rooms. More Info: Seton Hotel
  • Seafarers & International House – in Union Square, where I live, and just one subway stop to Grand Central, with a simple transfer to the 7 train
  • Leo House – 10 blocks from Penn Station
  • Menno House – near the E train, which goes to Penn Station with a simple transfer to LIRR
  • NYC Soldiers Sailors Marines Club – 6 block walk to Grand Central

The Dumont NYC, an “Executive Fitness” Hotel is walking distance to both Grand Central and Penn Stations. There are studio, junior and single bedroom suites, each outfitted with a kitchenette for longer visits. My girlfriend recently stayed here and said "They charge a slight premium for a sofa bed room, but we did have one. We had a queen/king and our son had the sofa bed. It had a very small kitchen and small bathroom. Overall, lovely."

Queens Hotels Near the US Open

There are many hotels nearby in Queens, some of which offer a shuttle bus service to the NTC during the US Open. These options are also great for anyone with a car, since parking fees are significantly lower than in Manhattan. Please check with the hotel to confirm shuttles and parking are offered.

Since the Long Island Rail Road stops at the NTC, staying on Long Island is also a possibility. Below is a short list of nearby hotels:

Fairfield Inn New York LaGuardia Airport/Flushing – “Visit the U.S. Open and enjoy a stress-free commute with our convenient shuttle service “

Courtyard New York LaGuardia Airport – "Offers a shuttle to and from Arthur Ashe (about $3 per person).

SpringHill Suites by Marriott (LGA) – “Great convenient hotel for attending the US Open tennis. They provide a shuttle service and staff is very nice.”

Verve Hotel, An Ascend Collection – “Great for US Open…just a few blocks from the Queensboro train station where we could catch the #7 into Manhattan or out to the BJK Tennis Center.”

Holiday Inn Express LaGuardia Airport – “Awesome for the US Open. The shuttle to/from the airport was great, taking at most 25 minutes from when you call them, and leaving the hotel on top of each hour.”

Marco LaGuardia Hotel by Lexington – “If you’re headed to the US Open, this is the place to stay. The convenient hotel shuttle takes you to and from the nearby tennis center, the restaurant next door is a hidden gem whose breakfast buffet can’t be beat, and the hotel staff is always helpful.”

LaGuardia Plaza Hotel – New York – “Providing a shuttle to and from the Open was wonderful, and one night match ran very late and exceeded the midnight pickup time. However, everyone was picked up by a late shuttle and taken to their hotels.”

How Long Does it Take to get to the US Open?

The LIRR takes about 15 minutes and the subway from Grand Central is about 30 minutes. As a general rule, leave yourself 45-60 minutes commuting time, and another 20 minutes to enter the grounds, especially if you bring a bag, as there are separate security lines for bag check.
