Ground Zero Memorial and Museum

The Ground Zero Memorial and Museum are officially called the 9/11 Memorial and the 9/11 Memorial Museum. Visiting Ground Zero will likely be difficult for most, if not all, of us, but this incredible tribute to the thousands of heroes lost on and involved in 9/11/01 is a must-do for anyone visiting NYC.

The 9/11 Memorial opened on September 11, 2011 and the 9/11 Memorial Museum will open in 2012. Here is the Insider Guide to visiting the 9-11 Memorial, World Trade Center Tribute Center, Ground Zero Museum and new World Trade Centers.

Visiting the Ground Zero 9/11 Memorial

Millions of visitors are expected in the first year of the 9/11 Memorial opening. There is still massive construction in the area, so there is a temporary timed reservation system to ensure maximum visitation. Visitors must reserve free advance passes for a specific date and time at 911memorial.org.

NYC Insider Tips

  • Make your 9/11 Memorial Reservation as soon as possible, and use the names of each individual visiting.
  • Bring your Identification and print the maps provided with your emailed tickets telling you the location of names (first responders, flight victims, WTC workers, etc).
  • Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for a complete visit.
  • Start at the 9/11 Memorial Preview Site on Vesey Street for about 20-30 minutes. Here you may (and should!) donate to the Memorial and purchase souvenirs.
  • Then head over to Albany Street a few minutes before your reservation and be prepared to show your identification and go through a security screening.
  • Plan to spend an hour at the Memorial. Even if you're not a "typical tourist," there is so much to absorb and process.

The 9/11 Memorial Museum (Opening 2012)

The mission of the National September 11 Memorial Museum, located at the World Trade Center site, is to bear solemn witness to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993. The Museum honors the nearly 3,000 victims of these attacks and all those who risked their lives to save others.

It further recognizes the thousands who survived and all who demonstrated extraordinary compassion in the aftermath.

Demonstrating the consequences of terrorism on individual lives and its impact on communities at the local, national, and international levels, the Museum attests to the triumph of human dignity over human depravity and affirms an unwavering commitment to the fundamental value of human life.

One World Trade Center will rise to 1,362 feet, the height of the original WTC South Tower, and feature a public, outdoor observation deck at the height of the original North Tower, on the 100th and 101st Floors. An illuminated antenna will rise from the center of the building to the symbolic height of 1,776 feet, 1776 being the birth year of the United States of America.

The building's design evokes classic New York skyscrapers in its elegance and symmetry while also referencing the torch of the Statue of Liberty. Upon completion, One World Trade Center will be the tallest building in the United States.

The building embodies an extraordinary amount of features that make it unprecedented in terms of life safety and security. In addition, One World Trade Center will further its distinction as a world-class model of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
