Museum at Eldridge Street

Described as “gasp-inducing” by The New York Times, the Museum at Eldridge Street is housed in the 1887 Eldridge Street Synagogue, a magnificent National Historic Landmark that has been meticulously restored. The synagogue is the first great house of worship built in America by Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. Today, it is the only remaining marker of the great wave of Jewish migration to the Lower East Side that is open to a broad public who wish to visit Jewish New York.

Museum at Eldridge Street

Once the heart of the Jewish Lower East Side, the Eldridge Street Synagogue s a part of a vibrant Chinatown today. Every June the Museum presents their signature Egg Rolls, Egg Creams and Empanadas Festival, to celebrate the diverse Jewish, Chinese and Puerto Rican communities of the neighborhood. The festival features music, folk arts, food and crafts enjoyed by thousands of people.

Explore the building’s history, architecture and culture while discovering its vibrant Lower East Side/Chinatown neighborhood. Highlights include awe-inspiring architecture, a new stained-glass window by artist Kiki Smith and Deborah Gans and award-winning digital displays. An off-the-beaten-path jewel, the Museum is a must-see site for those on the hunt for an authentic New York City experience.
