NYC Insider Spends a Month en España
Spain travel has always been on my list, so I thought what better way than to spend a long month living and traveling there, while also playing my favorite sport, tennis! I was super lucky to find Tennis Holidays in Spain online, which is run by the fantastic David Webb, who uses the same program, SBI, to build his sites as I do! David, his partner, Gareth and Gareth’s lovely fiancé all helped coordinate my trip, including highly personalized service, tons of emails and helping me figure out exactly where I am, which is Torre de la Hordada, on the Costa Blanca, in a lovely Villa.
Travel to Spain from NYC
I flew from NYC to Madrid (5 hrs) to Murcia (1 hr) on American Airlines and Gareth organized my car service (his father-in-law) for $30. About 20 minutes South East of Murcia, La Torre de la Hordada is a beautiful town right on the Mediterrean filled with Spaniards and British ex-pats. Being here in October is much like being in the Hamptons in September, right after the summer crowds have left, but the weather is still fantastic and perfect for tennis and touring!

La Torre de la Hordada, My Villa
I’m living in a lovely 2 Bedroom Villa, about a 10 minute walk from the Sea. There is a supermarket and 2 bars within a 3 minute walk, and it’s another 5 minutes to the “town square,” where there are tons of bars and restaurants.

Murcia
In between playing tennis, and learning the newest sport popular in South America, Paddle Tennis, I take a few day trips through a local bus coach company, Dave’s Tours. Some are better than others, depending on the guide. This first day trip to Murcia, Caravaca and Calasparra was fantastic (and cost around $20).

Caravaca and Calasparra
Caravaca de la Cruz is the fifth holiest city in the world after Santiago de Compostela, Santo Toribio de Libana, Rome and Jerusalem. With museum of fiesta, churches, shops, streets and quaint square. We took the tourist train ride to visit the world-famous sanctuary that houses the True Cross in its special room. Then we went to the cave church & sanctuary of Calasparra had a nice lunch with wine along the river Segura.
