Harlem, 111th St & Adam Clayton Powell Blvd to 136th St

The African American Day Parade, the largest Black Parade In America, is a colorful and musical event with crowds packing the streets of Harlem as floats glide belting music from soca to reggae, ragga and soul. The 2009 parade had over 900,000 spectators.

50th New York Film Festival

New York Film Festival 2011

A whopping 32 films comprise the Main Slate lineup for the 50th New York Film Festival. The bursting roster includes Cannes and other Film Festival winners. World premieres include Alan Berliner’s new essay film First Cousin, Once Removed, as well as the three previously-announced gala titles. Ang Lee’s Life of Pi will open the festival on Friday, September 28 while David Chase’s Not Fade Away is in the Centerpiece slot on Saturday, October 6 and Robert Zemeckis’ Flight will close the 50th NYFF on Sunday, October 14.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of various tributes, concerts, memorials, fundraisers, exhibitions and more taking place throughout September, and especially the weekend of the 11 year anniversary of 9-11.

In Memoriam Exhibition Preview – As part of its Day of Remembrance Information Forum, VOICES of September 11th will host a special limited preview of In Memoriam, the memorial exhibition that will be part of the 9/11 Memorial Museum. When the Museum opens, this exhibition will commemorate the lives of all who perished as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and February 26, 1993, and allow visitors to learn about each of the men, women, and children so senselessly killed in the attacks.

Memorial Ceremony at the World Trade Center Site – 8:30 AM -1:00 PM.

The event is not open to the public, but will be televised. The ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m. and observes six moments of silence, listed below. The reading of the names will begin after the first citywide moment of silence at 8:46 a.m.

8:46 am: American Airlines Flight 11 strikes the North Tower (1 WTC)

9:03 am: United Airlines Flight 175 strikes the South Tower (2 WTC)

9:37 am: American Airlines Flight 77 strikes the Pentagon

9:59 am: South Tower (2 WTC) collapses

10:03 am: United Airlines Flight 93 crashes in Somerset County, PA

10:28 am: North Tower (1 WTC) collapses

Tribute in Light is one of the most powerful and healing works of public art ever produced. The blue twin beams are presented annually by Municipal Art Society of New York, shining from dusk on September 11, through dawn the next day. Visible within a sixty-mile radius on a clear night, Tribute has become a world-renowned icon of remembrance, honoring those who were lost, as well as those who worked so hard to get our city through that terrible trial.
