Chartwell Dutiro and Timbila World Music Concert

Chartwell Dutiro and Timbila World Music Concert.

New York based Afrodelic group, Timbila reinvents some of the most beautiful music traditions of Zimbabwe and Mozambique with an East Village edge. The group is dedicated to adapting traditional music from Zimbabwe and Mozambique with a rock ‘n’ roll attitude. This Spring they collaborate with Chartwell Dutiro, one of the most remarkable and unusual mbira masters of Zimbabwe.  Much of Timbila’s original repertoire adapts centuries-old Shona mbira songs, traditionally used in ceremonies to attract the spirits of deceased ancestors. This collaboration stands alone in its beauty and capacity to transcend genres, open hearts and rock the house!

Chartwell Dutiro has played the Shona mbira virtually his entire life. From his village childhood in  Zimbabwe, when he played at spirit ceremonies, to his years performing with Zimbabwe’s iconic Thomas Mapfumo, to his more recent career as a teacher, solo artist, and bandleader in the UK, Chartwell has cut a remarkable path through African music. Chartwell is a superb instrumentalist and a soulful singer. His arrangements of Shona traditional music are both innovative and inspirational. He is also a gifted storyteller with a deep sense of history and a wry sense of humor. An evening in his presence, at Tagine Fine Moroccan Cuisine (www.taginedining.com) is an unforgettable experience.
