Personally, I don't know a single New Yorker who uses Expedia, TripAdvisor or any other global site for daily NYC happenings or recommendations. After you use our Vacation Guide, these should be all you need.
What to Do
NYCGO - official NYC Tourism site, lots of deals and offers
Time Out New York (TONY) - weekly magazine with current happenings. Tons of great free and bargain choices.
New York Magazine - weekly magazine, famous for their "Best of New York" lists
Ask a New Yorker - anything and everything you need to know from people who live, work and play in New York City
City Search - reviews and opinions on everything by locals. Lots of top 10 lists.
NYC Insider Blog - get the NYC Insider Scoop on what's going on in a "New York Minute." Get the feed while you're on vacation so you don't miss a thing!
NewYorkology - A New York Travel Guide, another NYC website with multiple contributors
Once you're here in New York City, bypass your hotel lobby tourist information and head straight to any newstand or deli to pick up current issues of Time Out New York, New York Magazine and if possible, the Friday New York Times Newspaper. These are the NYC Bibles of what's going right now - sales, museum exhibits, free events, restaurant openings, tours, activities, etc.
Getting Around
See New York City Street Map and NYC Subway
HopStop - map subway, bus and walking routes between addresses. While you're walking around, you can text any two addresses to "HSTOP (47867)" and they'll text you back directions. Or you can dowload their iPhone or PDA applications before you visit. Mobile info here.
Where to Eat
Open Table - free online restaurant reservations. Choose by neighborhood and cuisine, read reviews, interactive map.
City Search - reviews and opinions on everything by locals. Lots of top 10 lists. (if you are really a Foodie, also see ChowHound)
MenuPages - online menus for almost every NY restaurant, check the food and prices before you go, then make your reservation at Open Table.
ChowHound - a discussion board with all true "foodies," people really passionate about eating and drinking, especially in NYC.
