NYC Limos
Upon arriving in New York, you can use public transit, taxi, shuttle or NYC Limos to get to Manhattan.
|
Earlier in the NYC Vacation Guide, airport distances, prices and subway directions were covered on the cheap flights to New York page. A New York car service can be reserved just before you arrive, however, it is not always advantageous to reserve a car. In general, Limos from the airport are not the same companies to be used for a private limousine tour of NYC. |
NYC Insider Tip - NYC Limos
All the large NYC Limo companies keep cars in the holding areas 5 minutes from the three major airports. If a car is reserved in advance, and your flight is delayed, you will pay extra for wait time. Reserved cars also require the driver to park and wait for you by baggage claim with a sign, so be prepared to walk back to the parking lot with the driver.
To avoid these inconveniences, call the NYC Limos toll free phone numbers upon arrival at baggage claim. If traveling with less than 5 people, this is most often the fastest and cheapest way to use NYC Limos.
Shuttle buses charge per person and taxis are one rate for up to 4 people. Taxi vans hold 6 people, but are not as common. NYC Limos come in a variety of sizes and can be reserved to accommodate your party.
The most popular New York Car Service company is Carmel, and my personal favorite is Skyline, just because my family has known them for years. There's hardly any difference in price or service, as NYC Limos are very competitive.
Tourist vs. New Yorker
Drivers of both taxis and NYC Limos will know how to get to most hotels in Manhattan. However, if you really want to sound like a New Yorker and not a tourist, know your Cross Streets. When you get in to the car, make sure to say, "Park Central Hotel. 56th and 7th, please" and not "Park Central Hotel, 870 Seventh Avenue."
Addresses are a dead give away you are a visitor. It likely won't make any difference in price or service and the drivers are generally honest, so this is just for your information.
Newark International Airport
If flying in and out of EWR, make sure to note the taxi surcharges from NYC to NJ. NYC Yellow Cabs are not allowed to pick up return fares from EWR, so the passenger is responsible for their round trip tolls and an extra $15 fee. NYC Limos are allowed to pick up a return fair from EWR, so they are usually cheaper.
