Not visiting this month? See my plans for August, October, November, December.
These NYC Hidden secrets are not really hidden, or even secret. As a matter of fact, they are all very public.

Summer's over and everyone is back to work and school. Football season is under way and all the stores are packed with fall and winter clothes, even though it's too hot to wear them yet. A great time of year to wine and dine outside. The new Broadway season starts and we check the critic's reviews to see what the hottest new show will be. It is the 8 year anniversary of 9/11/01, always a somber day in NYC and the perfect time to make sure you visit the Ground Zero Museum.
I'm definitely going to catch a Giants football game, note Spa Week reservations open on September 11th (although I might wait til the 12th, because that just seems like bad luck), get God of Carnage tickets (to catch the current cast with James Gandolfini), along with all these top picks.
US Open Tennis
August 31-Sept 13, 2009
This is one of my all time favorite sporting events and I loved it even before I started playing tennis. The Billie Jean King National Tennis Center is one of the nicest sporting venues I've ever seen and the crowd is always amazing.

US Open 2008 - Roger Federer Wins! You should see the entire section James Blake reserves for hometown NYC fans - they go crazy!. And if watching Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal compete aren't enough entertainment, and they always are, I can drink wine and eat tapas while celebrity watching.
The grounds passes, which get you into the Tennis Center, but not the big matches, start around $11 (see recent US Open discount codes here) and are one of the best bargains in the city. Last year, with one of my day passes, I got to stand 3 feet from Serena and Venus while they were warming up. Take the 7 train there and back for $2, about 30 minutes each way. What more could you ask for?
Update September 2nd - photos of Sharapova, MacEnroe and more discount tickets.

Romance, view of the skyline, music and wine! TOTR just launched this new music series
Top of the Rock Night View and I can't wait to go! On top of the normal beautiful view, now I can enjoy music and a glass of wine while taking in the amazing view (music free with ticket purchase, cash bar). The series will feature a variety of performances, including The Mark Berman Jazz Trio (creator of the Sex and the City theme song), The Joan Capra String Quartet, Beledo on Spanish guitar and Jeanne Koehler.

Rock of Ages - Broadway Show
August 31 - October 8
(Oct 8th for discounted $59 tickets - the show will continue to run indefinitely)
I think this show stole my iPod and made it into a Broadway Musical. All my friends (and the critics) are raving about it and I might be the only person in NYC who hasn't seen it yet. I got movitated to finally go after finding this discount code at Ticketmaster for $59 tickets. Use code PKPBL4 at Ticketmaster or call 800.982.2787.
Synopsis: In 1987 on the Sunset Strip, a small town girl met a big city rocker and in LA’s most famous rock club, they fell in love to the greatest songs of the 80s. It’s ROCK OF AGES, an arena-rock love story told through the mind-blowing, face-melting hits of JOURNEY, NIGHT RANGER, STYX, REO SPEEDWAGON, PAT BENATAR, TWISTED SISTER, POISON, ASIA, WHITESNAKE and many more. Don’t miss this awesomely good time about dreaming big, playing loud and partying on! Update: See NYC Insider Guide Review
San Gennaro Festival - 82 Annual "Feast of San Gennaro"
September 10– 20, 2009

Sausage Making - by San Gennaro Feast If you're looking to experience Little Italy, compare every slice of Pizza in NYC, or have a 'sausage, onion and pepper' sandwich, San Gennaro is the festival for you. Although it is an annual celebration of faith, the Feast of San Gennaro has a huge variety of ethnic food delicacies, charming restaurants and cafes and even a world-famous cannoli-eating competition!
For more on all the kid-friendly activities, eating, maps and entertainment, see the San Gennaro Website.
Avenue Q - Broadway Show
Final Performance Sept 13, Golden Theatre
I don't normally see two Broadway Shows in a month, but somehow, I completely missed Avenue Q. Their final performance is September 13, and I just couldn't resist the discount tickets they were offering at BroadwayOffers using code AQPBX072.

Avenue Q Cast
Definitely not for kids (maybe teenagers), but I have to go see puppets sing songs such as, "I'm Not Wearing Underwear Today," "The Money Song," and "It Sucks To Be Me."
AVENUE Q is the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who comes to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. He soon discovers that the only neighborhood in his price range is Avenue Q; still, the neighbors seem nice. And would you believe the building's superintendent is Gary Coleman?!?

Broadway on Broadway
Sunday, September 13, 2009 at 12pm, 43rd and Broadway
One of New York's great outdoor events, Broadway on Broadway is a free concert co-produced in the heart of Times Square by The Broadway League and the Times Square Alliance. This free outdoor concert, attended by more than 50,000 fans, features musical numbers and appearances from almost every play and musical on Broadway, as well as sneak peeks at several upcoming shows opening in the new theatre season.
Broadway on Broadway 2009 will feature performances by stars from upcoming productions such as Burn the Floor, Fela!, Finian's Rainbow, Pure Country and Ragtime as well as some of Broadway's most beloved shows, including Billy Elliott The Musical, Chicago, In The Heights, Irving Berlin's White Christmas, Jersey Boys, Memphis, Next to Normal, The Phantom of the Opera, Shrek the Musical, South Pacific, West Side Story, Wicked, and more. All appearances are subject to change.
Fall 2009 Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit
Sept 5-7 and Sept 12-13, 2009, 12:00-6:00 pm daily

Ben Georgia, Nightlight Bold, Washington Square Art FestivalThe 79th Annual Washington Square Art Exhibit is free to the public. The show takes place in Greenwich Village, near NYU, on the sidewalks of University Place from East 10th Street, running south along the side of Washington Square Park to 3rd Street. The South end of the show, Schwartz Plaza, is also known as Bobkin Lane. Exhibit hours are Noon to 6:00 PM daily.
This is a great weekend to walk around the Village and see tons of beautiful artwork displayed by original artists. I've seen paintings, sculpture, eco-friendly art and lots of other unique pieces to see or even to purchase, at far less than gallery prices.
