NYC Hidden Secrets November 2009

The New York City Marathon, Thanksgiving Day and Veteran's Day. Outdoor attire will likely include scarfs, gloves and hats. The leaves might still be beautiful - or gone, depending on the climate. Make sure to check all tourist attractions for potential closings on American holidays. Broadway headliners include John Stamos, Daniel Craig and James Gandolfini to name a few (see below). The theme of the month is "the Holidays are coming," and toward the end of November, many of the department store windows will open their beautiful displays! The Rockefeller Tree lights on December 2nd (the first Wed in December).

83rd Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

Thursday, November 26th, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
Balloon Set Up, Wednesday, November 25th, 3:00 pm to 10:00 pm

Always fun, always free!spiderman_macys_parade

What could be more fun than Broadway Stars, Shrek, Spider Man, Hello Kitty, Smurf, SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer, Snoopy, Mickey Mouse and Buzz Lightyear all partying together in New York City?

New Parade Route for 2009. The parade will be moving from Broadway to a new route along 7th Avenue this year, allowing better spectator viewing. The Parade starts at 9am, so for best viewing get there no later than 7am.

The starting point is on Central Park West and 77th Street, however, it is not advisable to watch the parade on CPW or Columbus Circle. Move further down to 7th Avenue. There are high winds and lots of shade along CPW, so the floats and entertainers have been known to "rush" through this area. Pick a sunny spot down on 7th Avenue between Times Square and Macy's on 34th Street. See the New Thanksgiving Day Parade Route Map and choose your favorite spot.

Balloon Set Up. This is actually as much fun as the Parade itself and many of us have stood outside with Hot Chocolate (or, um, something stronger) and watched the Parade being set up. The set takes place on either side of the American Museum of Natural History, on 77th and 81st Streets between CPW and Columbus from 3-10pm on Wednesday, November 25th.

See the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade Site for details.

NYC Marathon, sponsored by ING

Sunday, November 1, 2009

nyc-marathonMake sure to map your route carefully on this day, as many streets will be blocked and closed. Especially the Upper East Side (Met and Frick) and the finish line in Central Park. The NYC Marathon is 26 miles and 385 yards of the world's most diverse marathon course. This year, actor and longtime conservation activist Edward Norton will run the ING New York City Marathon as part of the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust. Norton and 3 Maasai warriors will be leading 30 people from all walks of life running the ING New York City Marathon.

Spectators - First Avenue covers miles 16-19 of the race. The biggest crowds on the course line the streets on First Avenue, giving the runners a boost as they head toward the Bronx. If you want to leave First Avenue afterward, make sure to stand on the West side, as you will not be able to cross 1st Ave again until after the race.

6th Avenue Autumn Fair

New York City Street Fair
Photo from www.nycstreetfairs.com
Location: 6th Avenue from 34th - 42nd Street. If you are trying to avoid the Marathon, this is the place to be. Granted, attendance is still around 80,000 people.

In recent years, many of New York City's Street Fairs have become generic, so it's nothing fancy. It's a typical street fair, lots of funnel cake, sausage and various other street meats. But street fairs are always a nice place to walk around, especially if the weather is nice.

Plenty of diverse food, commercial vendors plus entertainment and music celebrating the season. More on NYC Street Fairs.
