Meatpacking District NY Guide

The Meatpacking District, also known as the Gansevoort Market, is only a few blocks, so you cannot get lost, but it is packed with upscale restaurants, night clubs and shopping. Like many NY neighborhoods, the MP District retains it's historical architecture, as it is lined with cobblestone streets and old warehouses, but, today, these same buildings house very modern shopping and dining. The heart of the Meatpacking District is Little West 12th Street.

Things to Do

The Highline (Gansevoort St to 34th St, 10th/11 Aves)

NYC’s newest outdoor park, a recently converted  railroad  a story above street level. Great views, kids love to play and look through the glass amphitheater. Entrances: Gansevoort St, 14th & 16th (elevators), 18th, 20th, 23rd, 26th, 28th, 30th (elevator) Sts.

Ground Zero Museum Workshop

$25, reservations required. The Ground Zero Museum Workshop is more kid-friendly than the World Trade Center site as they have special exhibits geared towards children of those we lost 9/11 to explain what happened to their parents. More on the Ground Zero Museum Workshop

Recommended Restaurants

Nothing in the MP District is a bargain or discounted. The restaurants are considered hip and trendy, with excellent quality, and they are all beautifully decorated. It is a wonderful area, but not for the extremely budget conscious. These restaurants are likely not appropriate on busy weekend nights for families with young children.

Anja (formerly Buddha Bar) – Asian, huge Buddha, slick atmosphere, can be loud (seen on Sex and the City).

Standard Hotel – new as of Spring 2009. The Standard Grill restaurant and outdoor bar

Little W 12th St Restaurants – Pastis (French), STK (Steak), Ono (sushi), Revel (fish/seafood) – cutest outdoor garden with lights

Plunge -  the rooftop bar at the Gansevoort Hotel. Has a pool and beautiful views of the city.

Hogs & Heifers ( 859 Washington St at 13th St) - have you seen the movie Coyote Ugly? Cowboy themed bar, mainly serve beer, and the women often take off their bras. H&H is meant for a very "specific" crowd.

Tenjune - very hip NYC nightclub. Very difficult to get in if not on the list or not spending several hundred dollars on bottle service.

Meatpacking District Shopping

Boutiques on these few blocks include DVF (Diane Von Furstenberg), Alexander McQueen, Jeffrey (great shoes!), Stella McCartney, Theory, Scoop, Catherine Malandrino, Calypso, Ed Hardy, Scoop (a local NY favorite), Puma Black Store,

Apple Store (14th St, 9th Ave) - very sleek, modern glass with multiple floors.

Meatpacking District Hotels

Jane Hotel (113 Jane St, West St)– the rooms are ship-cabin-style, mostly designed for solo travelers, and a good budget hotel choice in this area.

Hotel Gansevoort (18 9th Ave) – rooftop outdoor deck with lounge areas and a pool for guests. Beautiful skyline views from roof.

The Standard Hotel (848 Washington Street, W 13th St) – great NYC views from the rooms, hot spot for the Grill and huge Outdoor Patio.
